THE STUDIO

La Boratée is a textile design studio specialized in handcrafted textiles and based in Amsterdam, Netherlands. It is a space for material exploration, with a focus on macrame and crochet. Things get knotted, entangled, interwoven. Threads becomes surfaces, surfaces become three-dimensional objects. Embracing crafts with a contemporary sensibility, La Boratée offers a range of lighting, celebrating labour-intensive techniques in bespoke outcomes. Each lamp is one of a kind, assembled by hand in the atelier in Amsterdam. At La Boratée, we believe that the value of objects comes from the time and care we put in their making. The designs stem from materials that are carefully curated. We are always on the look-out for second-hand goods and textile waste to reuse in our products, giving them a new life and weaving stories in the surface of our crafted objects. The name La Boratée encompasses various principles that are at the core of the making process. Collaborate - Elaborate - Laboratory Indeed, the atelier is a lab for experimentation, and elaboration of beautiful, detailed products, made in collaboration with diverse parties. We also work on commissions and create personalized goods that are made in collaboration with our customers, but also with architects and designers. Would you like to collaborate? Feel free to contact us at morane.havet@laboratee.com.

THE FOUNDER

My name is Morane Havet. I am a French designer based in Amsterdam. Fascinated by handcrafts and specialized in macrame and crochet, my practice evolves around the ideas of slow making process, our relation to time and how to highlight the values of craftsmanship. With my work, I want to share the emotions I get from making and from the beauty of handmade things. I founded La Boratée in 2020, when graduating from the Master Fashion Held in Common at ArtEZ (Netherlands). I see the studio as a lab made for people to gather, share stories, create together and have fun, always encouraging new collaborations to flourish. I share my expertise with fashion brands, architects and designers. This expertise expands over diverse textile techniques, including macramé, crochet, knitting and weaving.

THE WORK

Design, textile and craft are at the core of projects and collaborations, with the aim to have a fair and sustainable production, promoting craftsmanship and curating unique work. The products of La Boratée tell a story. The story of the makers, the story of the land where the material grew, and everything in between.

I design and make textiles, mostly using handcrafts such as macrame and crochet, directly in 3D, resulting in sculptural objects or garments. I am continuously exploring the endless possibilities offered by knots and entanglements. I also design interactive spaces, in which textiles are used as a medium for learning and collective making. My work is characterized by the combination of in-depth technical knowledge of textiles, an eye for creating three-dimensional surfaces and the will to bring these skills into the public space through e.g., immersive installations.

In my studio I have three different activities: one consists of designing, making and selling works made out of handcrafted textiles, with a focus on lamps. These are all unique and handmade pieces. In parallel, I collaborate with other designers and interior architects and do commissions for specific projects or places, in which I bring my craft expertise. I would like to develop a library of textiles, showcasing my craft expertise, and keep on exploring innovative ways of using traditional handcrafts in textile design. Thirdly, I also give workshops and public interventions, teaching handcrafts and facilitating shared moments of making.
